Rohan Rao, a senior at Fulton County’s Johns Creek High School, is the 2016 State PAGE STAR Student. He named Dr. John “Jack” Bucsko, his Spanish teacher at Johns Creek High School, as his State PAGE STAR Teacher.  Erwin Gan Cai, a senior at Cobb County’s Wheeler High School is the Runner-up State PAGE STAR Student and chose Raymond Furstein, his AP Calculus AB teacher as his STAR Teacher.

The announcement came at the State PAGE (Professional Association of Georgia Educators) STAR Banquet, which was held on Monday, April 18, 2016, at the Crowne Plaza Ravinia in Atlanta.  Twenty PAGE STAR Student Region Winners were finalists in the culminating event of the annual STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program for high school seniors.  Among those 20 finalists, 10 scored 2400 on one administration of the SAT, and all were in the top ten percent or top ten of their class. The search for the State PAGE STAR Student began earlier this year with the naming of 522 local STAR Students from each of the participating public and independent high schools across the state.

“PAGE is pleased to be a major sponsor of STAR and responsible for its administration,” said PAGE Executive Director Dr. Allene Magill.  “We support STAR to celebrate academic achievement and to recognize excellence among Georgia’s professional educators.”

Responsibility for the statewide STAR program was given to PAGE in 1994 by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, which created the program in 1958.  The PAGE Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and The Coca-Cola Company are primary sponsors of the state event. Other sponsors of the event include: AT&T Georgia; the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation; Price Gilbert, Jr. Charitable Fund; the Professional Association of Georgia Educators; the Savannah College of Art and Design; and The Mozelle Christian Endowment. Since its inception, the program has honored more than 25,500 students and their teachers for academic excellence.

Rao is a resident of John’s Creek and is the son of Nataraj Rao and Ritu Rao. As this year’s State PAGE STAR Student, Rao was honored with a $5,000 scholarship from AT&T Georgia presented by George Cleveland, vice president of Channel Operations for Cricket Wireless, a wholly owned subsidiary of AT&T.  State PAGE STAR Teacher Dr. Jack Bucsko of Johns Creek, Georgia, received a $2,500 cash award from the Frances Wood Wilson Foundation.  Runner-up State PAGE STAR Student Erwin Gan Cai was presented a $1,000 scholarship from the PAGE Foundation by PAGE President Stephanie Davis Howard.  He also received a $1,000 scholarship from The Coca-Cola Company presented by Mark Davis, president of The Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation.  Cai is the son of Huaizheng  Cai and Fen Gan and is a resident of Marietta, Georgia.  PAGE President Stephanie Davis Howard presented the Runner-up State PAGE STAR Teacher Raymond Furstein of Woodstock, Georgia, with the $500 Mozelle Christian Endowment Award, and Georgia Chamber of Commerce Director of Public Policy Jason O’Rouke presented a $500 award to Furstein from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.

The PAGE Foundation, PAGE and The Coca-Cola Company sponsored the State Banquet.  The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) sponsored the evening reception.  Each finalist and their teacher received a hand-blown glass star by Lillie Glassblowers from the PAGE Foundation presented by PAGE President Stephanie Davis Howard and PAGE Foundation President John Varner.  Local STAR Students and STAR Teachers attending the banquet received a memento of the evening, awarded by SCAD and presented by Stephanie Davis Howard and Dr. Teresa Griffis, Savannah College of Art and Design vice president and senior academic officer. At the 12 PAGE STAR Region events, Region STAR Students received a $250 Cash Scholarship from the Price Gilbert, Jr. Charitable Fund and another $150 Award from the PAGE Foundation.  Region STAR Teachers received a $200 award from the Georgia Chamber of Commerce.
